SOLD. Monumental (9ft tall) pair of Wooden Torcheres / Columns. Circa 1890.

Item #monumental_torcheres

Monumental and magnificent pair of torchere stands, probably used as columns for sculpture display.  These are 9ft / 274cm tall.

Heavy, turned and carved wooden columns decorated with period papier-mâché and wooden scrolls, kneeling Atlantean figures and urns.  Foliate circular sconces slot solidly into stem. Triangular platform base sits on heavy duty original (working) castors.

At some point converted for electrical use. We have removed the electrics for cleaning but these can be provided (they are labelled with the brand 'Paiste', and are 250V - typical for the period and we think part of the original design).

Can be used to great effect with or without the electrics.  When in use, these run around the top perimeter of the sconces and are designed to cast light on an object, i.e. a large sculpture.

Possibly commissioned as one-off items for a government building, library, museum or bank circa 1890 / 1900. Potential uses could include trade fairs and shows (i.e. Chelsea Flower Show etc...), large conservatories, hallways, high-end restaurants, hotels, or even theatre, film... etc.  Rare.
